In April 2007 the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Energy Efficient Standard were defined. By 2016 the Government's target is to have "zero carbon" for all new house designs.
At K & D Joinery we have with great enthusiasm been actively designing a product range to meet the set criteria of Carbon Neutral house design. K & D only manufacture in timber, which has a better thermal conductivity over steel, aluminium or plastic- with softwood at 0.14W/mK. This blends well with our FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody timber accreditation.
Our triple glazed ambient passive Tilt & Turn and Fully Reversible outward opening windows and insulated doors are now at levels of only 0.8W/m2K. Thse have been expertly designed and manufactured, with every part of the process optimised. We are working with the University of East London, the Eureka Project, to assist with product refinement and new product development. Their research and knowledge base is on sustainable construction, the design methods and materials are used to maximise a products potential to enable a Carbon Neutral outcome.
In the industry the U values have been reduced from typically 2.2W/m2K of a few years ago, to 1.8W/m2K. However K & D's ambient passive window products now have triple glazed soft coat technology. This allows the external short wave energy to pass through the glass, but internal heat energy to be reflected. This is one of the main priciples of passive solar gain.
K & D have to their benefit the London Sustainable Industries Park adjacent to their site with 25 hectares of land dedicated to this sector. So with our Passive Joinery we are at the centre of "manufacturing for sustainable communities".
